John Romagnoli Named New Athletic Director of A.B. Miller
At the July 14, 2010 meeting of the Fontana Unified
School District Board of Education, the Board approved John Romagnoli as the new
Athletic Director of A.B. Miller High School.
Mr. Romagnoli was born in California and after
spending several years moving back and forth between California and New Jersey,
his family ultimately settled in Riverside. However, seeing a good thing over here in
Fontana, Mr. Romagnoli transferred to Fohi and is a proud graduate of the class
of 1986.
After completing his undergrad work as an
English/Pre-Med major at Cal State San Bernardino, Mr. Romagnoli said, “I was
pretty certain I’d go into the medical field in some capacity, but needed a
break from school.” So, he tried out several jobs, including construction, comprehensive
PE in a K-8 private school, and even sales for a tile company. After taking some
time off to travel through Europe, Mr. Romagnoli began subbing. “My pre-med
units allowed me to accept a position teaching science at A.B. Miller in October
of 1996,” he said. “I coached basketball as an assistant that year and
eventually moved over to teach English the following year.” Mr. Romagnoli has
been the Boys’ Varsity Basketball Coach at A.B. Miller for 11 seasons.
Coincidentally, Mr. Romagnoli met Ed Kearby,
Athletic Director at Summit High School, when he was just out of college and Mr.
Kearby was coaching Varsity Basketball at Fohi. They met when their respective
men's league teams got into a bit of a squabble during a game. “We were on
opposite teams and it was pretty heated!” said Mr. Romagnoli. “He later found
out that I was coaching an 8th grade team, and, oddly, called me to interview
for a position as his JV Coach, which I accepted and we have been friends ever
since.”
Mr. Romagnoli will fill
the position left vacant when longtime Athletic Director Dwight Berry retired at the end of the 2009-10
school year. “We are delighted to have John move from teacher/coach to our
Athletic Director,” said Principal Heather Griggs. “Mr. Romagnoli has served as
a teacher, coach and mentor for hundreds of A.B. Miller students; I am confident
that he will bring the same leadership to our athletic program.”
“I have been so blessed with the caliber of young
men that have gone through our program,” said Mr. Romagnoli. “We have coached some great
guys who I am really proud of. On top of that, my lead assistant for 10 seasons
has been David Mead (a childhood friend and teacher at Ruble Middle). It has
been a great ride, and I look forward to supporting all of our athletes and
coaches at A.B. Miller, a school I am extremely proud to be part of.”
