Dear Fontana Community,
The challenges facing children today are far greater than they were for young
people just a generation ago. Drugs and gangs, predators on the Internet,
violence on television and in real life are just some of the negative influences
they may come into contact with in their daily life. As children face these
dangers, it is important that the most important people in their life – their
parents – be prepared to help them make good decisions. But who can parents go
to for information?
I am pleased to announce that the Fontana Unified School District, in
collaboration with the City of Fontana, will be holding a free “Safety Summit:
Support for Parents” on Monday, November 9th at the Steel Workers Auditorium
- en Español).
Police and school representatives will present information on the following
topics:
- MySpace and Facebook: Learn about the hazards of social networking on the
Internet.
- Gang Awareness: Find out about gang clothing and tattoos and learn how to
prevent your child from being recruited by gangs.
- Drug Abuse: Identify risks and signs of addiction.
- Teen Driving: Learn about the current laws and DUI information.
- Child Welfare and School Attendance: Find out about intervention programs and
school attendance requirements.
- Question & Answer Forum: There will also be an opportunity for the public to ask
questions of School District and Police representatives.
A limited number of translation headsets will be available for our
Spanish-speaking parents.
I encourage parents to take advantage of this special opportunity. Our goal in
holding the Safety Summit is to provide you with one of the best defenses in the
protection of your child – awareness.
Best Wishes,
Cali L. Olsen-Binks
Superintendent
