Meet the 2009 Vals and Sals
This week and next, Fontana's high schools will be holding graduation ceremonies.
Valedictorians and Salutatorians were selected from the highest ranked seniors at each of the high schools.
Meet these outstanding young men and women.

Valedictorian -
Princess Lumban-Gaol
A.B. Miller's Valedictorian, Princess Lumban-Gaol, was a member of the
Volleyball Team, Rebels for Christ, Alpha-Omega Sister Society,
CSF (California Scholastic Federation),
Academic Decathlon, was President of both Leo Club and Concert Choir, and
she started the Red Cross Club at her school and was its President for 2 years.
She cites Mr. Windley, her AP Statistics and Physics Teacher, as being a big
influence on her. She quotes a line from the movie "Little Miss Sunshine"
as reflecting her high school experience, "High school - those are your prime
suffering years. You don't get better suffering than that." Although
Princess is quick to point out that the character is talking about how he
learned more about himself when times were difficult than when they were easy.
The difficult times "taught me who I was and what I valued," she said.
This fall, Princess will be attending the University of California,
Berkley where she will major in Mathematics. She said that while she still
has the dream of becoming a doctor, mathematics have become a recent passion for
her. Said Princess, "Even if I do become a doctor, I'd still like to teach
mathematics after I retire, just for fun."
Salutatorian - Stacey Ma
A.B. Miller's
Salutatorian, Stacey Ma, was a member of the Tennis Team,
CSF (California Scholastic Federation), Alpha-Omega Sister Society, Health
Services Academy and Key Club. She cites her teachers, Mrs. Cisneros, Mr.
Bertok, Mr. Windley, Miss Williams, Miss Paris, Mr. Lee and all her GATE
teachers from Sequoia as having a big influence on her academically. Stacey
said she really enjoyed lunch time at school, because it was school but it
wasn't a class. Said Stacey, "It was stress free!" She also enjoyed
Key Club and has performed somewhere between 100 and 150 hours of community
service. This fall, Stacey will head off to UCLA where she will be
studying Biochemistry. She plans to become a pharmacist or possibly something else
in the medical field.

Valedictorian - Christopher Carney
Fohi's Valedictorian,
Christopher Carney, was the manager for the varsity basketball and softball teams.
He was a member of Key Club with over 50 hours of community service and was the
president of CSF (California Scholastic Federation). During his junior
year, he was a member of the Academic Decathlon Team. Christopher has enjoyed his
years at Fohi, especially "the whole prom court/senior prom experience and being with the girls' softball team
in wild victories over A.B. Miller and Yucaipa." He cites his teachers
Mrs. Konop and Mr. Fischer as having the greatest influence on him. This
fall, Christopher will head off to the University of California, Berkley where
he planned to major in statistics. When he graduates, Christopher said "I
want to find a job in professional baseball as a statistician."
Salutatorian - Samantha Phou
Fohi's Salutatorian, Samantha Phou, was a member of CSF (California
Scholastic Federation), Academic Decathlon, and Academy Club. During her
Fohi years, she notes her Student of the Month lunch during her junior year as an especially fond
memory. She cites her Mr. Fischer, her calculus teacher, and Mr.
Alexander, her AP biology teacher, as having the greatest influence on her. This fall, Samantha will be attending the University of
California, Los Angeles where she will be majoring in microbiology/immunology.
After graduation, she plans to go into the medical field.

Valedictorian -
Melody Segura Suarez
Kaiser's Valedictorian, Melody Suarez, was a member of CSF (California
Scholastic Federation), Key Club, Advancement Via Individual Determination
(AVID), Advance Placement Spanish Club, and has been an AVID tutor and public
library volunteer. She says that the entire "high school experience was
truly memorable for me. I always felt supported by my teachers,
counselors, and friends. Most of all my family was very supportive.
I truly loved all the activities, clubs, and athletic events" Melody said
that she was inspired by her many teachers, "such as Mr. Young, Ms. Marchis,
Mrs. Colangelo, Mr. Ungerer, and Mr. Williams. The passion they have for
their career truly motivated me to follow my own passions and dreams."
This fall, Melody will be attending the University of California, Berkley with a
double major in Economics and Media Studies. Once she finishes her
undergraduate education, she hopes to either become a journalist and "help
inform people about serious issues or own my own boutique with my own clothing
designs and hopefully make enough profit to create a foundation that helps
financially struggling families and those dealing with cancer and diabetes.
Salutatorian - Jacob Knudsen
Kaiser Salutatorian Jacob Knudsen was a member of the Freshman Basketball
Team, Track and Field and Cross Country Teams, Academic Decathlon Team, National
Honors Society, and is an Eagle Scout. Says Jacob, "Mr. Dodds and Mr.
O'Conner, my Academic Decathlon coaches, have always been there, supporting me
and pushing me to do my best." Jacob received a full-tuition scholarship
from Brigham Young University in Utah and plans to attend there in the fall,
where he will major in English. "At this point," Jacob says, "I would like
to become a professional writer."
Salutatorian - Jacqueline Del Castillo
Kaiser Salutatorian Jacqueline Del Castillo was a member of the Girls'
Basketball Team, Key Club, National Honor Society, BSU, Spanish Club, GATE,
Advanced Biology Club, and President of CSF (California Scholastic Federation).
She has been active in Relay For Life, tutoring, tree planting, and park
clean-ups. Jacqueline cites her teacher, Mrs. Pilgrim, as being a big
influence on her. "She has helped me through everything, not only in my
education but also my personal life." This fall, Jacqueline will be
attending La Sierra University where she will be majoring in Chemistry.
Jacqueline said, "I want to become a dermatologist after medical school."
Salutatorian -
Jacklyn Samano
Kaiser Salutatorian Jacklyn Samano was a member of Key Club,
CSF (California Scholastic Federation), National Honor Society, Artists Club,
Spanish Club, GATE Club, International Explorers, and Academic Decathlon.
Jacklyn says that her teachers Mrs. Dodds, Mr. Dodds, Mr. MacKinney, Mrs.
Anderson, Ms. Marchis, and Ms. Ervin have all been a big influence on her during
her education. "My first 200 meter dash track race was my most memorable
(experience) because I proved to myself that I have a wide-ranged standard of
determination," said Jacklyn. This fall Jacklyn will be attending the
University of California, Los Angeles where she will be majoring in
Anthropology. After she graduates, Jacklyn says, "I want to work as a
Linguistics Anthropologist and work my way towards a position as Research
Institute Director for a prestigious university."
Salutatorian - Gilbert Dang
Kaiser Salutatorian Gilbert Dang was a member of the Tennis Team, Key Club, CSF
(California Scholastic Federation), National Honor Society, GATE, Marching Band,
Concert Band, Orchestra, and Speech/Debate. He credits his teachers Mr.
Dodds and Mr. Fransworth as "inspiring me to do better and to think outside the
box." He notes that the times he spent just kicking back at his friend's
house were among his best school memories. This fall, Gilbert will be
attending the University of California, Los Angeles where he will be majoring in
Biology. His goal is to become "a doctor and maybe dedicate some time to
becoming a musician."

Summit High School

|
Valedictorian - Minh Nguyen
Summit's Valedictorian Minh Nguyen has been in Tennis Club, Math Club, CSF
(California Scholastic Federation), National Honor Society, and has been a
tutor. He said that he believes all teachers had their own ways of
influencing him and that "everything I learned from them is very valuable and
helped me become the person I am." Minh notes that his favorite high
school experience is the political campaign in his government class. He
said, "It offered a great way to build my team collaboration skills." This
fall, Minh will be attending Stanford University where he will be majoring in
Mathematics. When he graduates, Minh would like to be a college professor.
Salutatorian - Evelynne Chavez
Summit's Salutatorian Evelynne Chavez has served on ASB since her sophomore
year as ASB President, on the Girls Basketball Team as JV Captain during her
sophomore and junior year, and ran Varsity Long Distance in Track during the
sophomore year. She cites her teachers Mr. Atkins, Mr. Catalan, Ms.
Mendoza, and Mr. Prentiss, as being the biggest influence on her. Evelynne
said, "My favorite high school experience would have to be my involvement in
ASB, because it helped me grow as a person and made me a part of Summit's
history." This fall, she will be attending the University of California,
Berkley where she will major in Psychobiology. Evelynne said she wants to
become a pediatrician.
